West Nile Virus Causes First Fatality in the Netherlands This Year

Amsterdam – The Netherlands’ national public‑health institute, the RIVM, reported on Wednesday that a patient has died in a Dutch hospital after contracting West Nile virus. This marks the first fatality linked to the disease in the country since the virus was first identified here in 2020.

Recent infections and the fatal case

Last week the RIVM announced the first locally acquired West Nile virus infection in the Netherlands since 2020, noting that three infections were now believed to have occurred within the country’s borders. The identity of the deceased patient has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the fatality is one of the three previously reported cases.

How the virus spreads

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. While most people experience no symptoms, the World Health Organization estimates that about one in 150 infected individuals develop severe, potentially life‑threatening illness, which can include neurological complications.

Climate factors and regional trends

The WHO has warned that rising temperatures are extending the season and geographic range for mosquitoes, allowing West Nile virus to spread more widely across Europe. Recent summer reports indicate increasing case numbers in Greece and Italy, underscoring the broader regional risk.

Despite these trends, the RIVM emphasized that the likelihood of a West Nile virus infection in the Netherlands remains “very unlikely.” Nonetheless, health officials are urging the public to take standard mosquito‑prevention measures, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves during peak mosquito activity, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed.

Public‑health response

RIVM spokespersons are monitoring the situation closely and have advised healthcare providers to remain vigilant for symptoms of West Nile virus, especially in patients presenting with fever, headache, or neurological signs during the mosquito season. The agency continues to collaborate with European partners to track the spread of the virus and share surveillance data.

What families can do

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to educate children about mosquito safety and to ensure that outdoor activities are conducted with appropriate protection. Simple steps, such as applying EPA‑registered repellents and wearing protective clothing, can significantly reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

While the recent death is a tragic reminder of the potential severity of West Nile virus, health officials stress that the overall risk to the Dutch population remains low. Ongoing public‑health monitoring and community awareness are key to preventing further cases as the summer progresses.
