West End School expands to co‑ed, adding girls for second year in Louisville

West End School, a longtime fixture in Louisville’s west side, opened its doors to girls for the first time last fall. Now in its second year as a co‑educational school, the campus is buzzing with new energy as families, teachers and students build on the lessons learned during that inaugural year.

First‑generation girls set the tone

Parents like Qiana Bradley remember the excitement of being among the first girls to enroll. “She’s just always excited about the next day. She’s excited about coming to school,” Bradley said of her daughter Ivy, who was part of the original cohort. Bradley added that the pioneering girls helped shape the culture for those who will follow, noting, “They were the first but won’t be the last. And that’s what makes it very exciting.”

New facilities and a long‑term growth plan

The school’s recent expansion includes a state‑of‑the‑art building with eight classrooms serving pre‑K through second grade. Administrators have mapped out a gradual addition of one grade each year, aiming to serve roughly 300 students through eighth grade. “We’ll change the trajectory of the west of Louisville by changing the trajectory of each child, one student at a time,” said Head of School Greg Ross.

Girls bring joy to the campus

Destiny Carter, a kindergarten teacher who helps guide the school’s growth, observes a noticeable shift in atmosphere. “Seeing how much joy the girls add to the environment of the school is really beautiful,” she said. Students echo that sentiment. “My favorite part about school? I love learning, and I love being good,” said fourth‑grader Jo’el Slaughter, who also looks forward to recess.

Academic outcomes and community impact

Ross highlighted that every West End graduate finishes high school, with many earning full scholarships to private schools. The school’s advisory team, composed of local female leaders, works to ensure that curricula and support services meet the needs of its growing female population. “This can be a model for other schools to look at, to see how they can cater to kids in their community,” Carter added.

Looking ahead

With each new grade, West End School aims to maintain a close‑knit community where every child feels supported, included and prepared for the next steps in life. The administration’s focus on character development, academic excellence and family partnership reflects a broader desire to strengthen the west Louisville neighborhood through education.

Parents, teachers and local leaders alike see the school’s evolution as a sign of hope for the area, believing that a strong educational foundation will lift families and foster a brighter future for the entire community.
