Savannah families gathered on September 17 for the ribbon‑cutting and building blessing of the newly renovated S.T.E.A.M. Spot for Kidz at Wesley Community Centers. The event highlighted a collaborative effort among local nonprofit leaders, design professionals, and Alair Savannah, which contributed in‑kind services valued at more than $47,000.
Community partnership drives the project
The renovation turned an underutilized area into a modern learning environment focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Alair Savannah provided reduced fees and discounted hourly rates throughout the design and construction phases, underscoring the firm’s commitment to investing in local families.
Greenline Architecture, led by architect Monica Mastriani—who also serves on the Wesley Community Centers Board of Directors—worked closely with Wesley staff to ensure the space meets the specific needs of Savannah’s children and their families. “This project began with a clear vision from the Wesley team and the community they serve,” said Walter Strong, partner at Alair Savannah. “By bringing together local expertise, community support, and a shared commitment to creating opportunities for young people, we were able to help create a space that will support learning, creativity, and growth for years to come.”
Programmatic focus for local youth
Under the direction of Wesley Community Centers Director Tammy Mixon‑Calderon, the S.T.E.A.M. Spot for Kidz will host hands‑on programs that let students explore engineering concepts, artistic expression, and technological innovation. “This renovation is about creating opportunities for children and families,” Mixon‑Calderon said. “The S.T.E.A.M. Spot for Kidz will give young people a place to explore, create, and grow, and we’re excited to welcome the community into this new space.”
The location of the center holds special significance, as it sits in the same neighborhood where Alair Savannah maintains its office and where Greenline Architecture was previously located. This proximity reinforces the deep local ties that made the project possible.
Looking ahead
The completion of the renovation marks a milestone in Wesley Community Centers’ broader effort to expand programming and resources for Savannah families. An ongoing capital campaign continues to fund future growth, ensuring that the organization can sustain and broaden its impact on the city’s children and neighborhoods.
Community members are invited to tour the new S.T.E.A.M. Spot for Kidz, attend upcoming workshops, and support the center’s mission to provide enriching educational experiences for the next generation of Savannah leaders.
