WDSRA Celebrates 50 Years with Community Block Party in Naperville

Naperville – The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) will honor five decades of service to individuals with disabilities with a free block party on Sunday, August 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The celebration will be held at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion, a central spot along the DuPage River.

Celebrating a Half‑Century of Inclusion

Founded in 1976, WDSRA has provided recreational, educational, and social programs that help participants develop confidence, build friendships, and engage with the broader community. Over the years, the organization has relied on the support of participants, families, staff, volunteers, donors, and local partners. The upcoming event is designed to thank those supporters and to showcase the organization’s impact.

Event Details and Activities

The block party promises an afternoon of family‑friendly entertainment. Attendees can enjoy inflatables, obstacle courses, carnival games, a petting zoo, face painting, a dunk tank, live music, food trucks, a photo booth, Giant Jenga, Connect Four, and other interactive stations. All activities are free, though registration is required in advance via the WDSRA website.

“This is a chance for the community to see the work we do and for our participants to share their stories,” said a WDSRA spokesperson. “We want families, neighbors, and anyone interested in our mission to come together, have fun, and learn how they can get involved.”

How to Participate

Registration can be completed online at www.wdsra.com. The site provides a simple sign‑up form and additional information about the organization’s programs, volunteer opportunities, and donation options. Because space is limited, early registration is encouraged.

In addition to the festivities, the event will feature brief presentations highlighting WDSRA’s milestones, upcoming initiatives, and ways the community can support continued growth. Local businesses and civic groups are also invited to set up informational tables.

Why It Matters to Naperville

Naperville and the surrounding DuPage County area have long valued inclusive community initiatives. WDSRA’s work aligns with the city’s broader goals of fostering accessible recreation and strengthening family bonds. The block party offers a visible reminder that public‑private partnerships and volunteerism can create lasting, positive change for residents of all abilities.

Community members who have benefited from WDSRA’s programs often cite the organization as a vital part of their family’s support network. By celebrating its 50th anniversary, the association not only honors its past but also looks ahead to future expansions that will continue to serve the region’s growing needs.

Looking Ahead

As WDSRA plans its next decade, leaders are exploring new program sites, expanded transportation options for participants, and additional collaborations with schools and faith‑based groups. The block party serves as both a celebration and a platform to gather input from families and partners about future directions.

For more information, to register, or to learn how to volunteer or donate, visit the WDSRA website or contact the organization directly.
