Wayne Gretzky, known as “The Great One,” is a Hall of Fame hockey player who holds the records for most points (2,857 career points) and most assists (1,963 career assists) in National Hockey League (NHL) history.
Early Life and Career
Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. His father, Walter Gretzky, was a telephone technician, and his mother was Phyllis (Hockin) Gretzky. Gretzky married Janet Jones on July 16, 1988, and they have five children: Emma, Tristan, Trevor, Ty, and Paulina.
Gretzky’s hockey career began at a young age, and he scored his 1,000th lifetime goal at 13 in an exhibition hockey game. He turned professional in 1978, signing with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association. Gretzky’s contract was sold to the Edmonton Oilers in 1978, and he played for the team until 1988.
Achievements and Awards
Gretzky won four Stanley Cup championships with the Edmonton Oilers and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy (NHL Playoff MVP) twice. He was also awarded the Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) nine times and the Art Ross Trophy (NHL scoring title) 10 times.
Gretzky played in 18 NHL All-Star Games and held outright or shared 61 NHL records at the time of his retirement in 1999. He was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1999 and had his jersey number (No. 99) retired by the entire NHL.
