Kim Yo Jong is a North Korean government official and the sister of Kim Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea. Little is known about her personal life, as the family is notoriously secretive.
Early Life and Education
Kim Yo Jong was born on September 26, 1987, or 1988. Her father was Kim Jong Il, the former leader of North Korea, and her mother was Ko Yong Hui. She attended school in Bern, Switzerland, around the same time as her brother Kim Jong Un in the late 1990s. She studied under various pseudonyms.
Kim Yo Jong attended Kim Il Sung University and later worked in the National Defense Commission and served as her father’s personal secretary. In 2014, she was appointed vice director of the Workers’ Party of Korea Propaganda and Agitation Department.
Career
In 2017, the US Treasury Department sanctioned Kim in response to human rights abuses and censorship activities. She has also served as an alternate member of the Workers’ Party of Korea’s Politburo and was elected to the Supreme People’s Assembly in 2019.
In 2021, Kim was appointed to the State Affairs Commission, the country’s ruling body headed by her brother. In 2022, she called for a deadly retaliation against South Korea, blaming the country for North Korea’s Covid-19 outbreak.
In 2026, Kim was promoted to director of a party department, after years in a deputy role.
