Waterville’s Roche de Boeuf Bridge Preservation Gains Support

In Waterville, Ohio, the historic Roche de Boeuf Bridge is at the center of a growing preservation effort. Recent engineering reviews have provided a hopeful outlook for the 118-year-old structure, suggesting it can be stabilized and repurposed for future use.

Community and Government Collaboration

The bridge, a significant landmark in Waterville, has been the focus of preservation efforts for many years. City officials, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and the Save the Bridge Association are actively exploring options to keep the bridge standing. Mayor Tim Pedro emphasized the bridge’s historical and cultural importance, noting its presence on the city’s logo and its iconic status in the community.

Mayor Pedro stated, “The interurban bridge behind us has been part of the rich history of Waterville for many, many years. It’s an icon. We’re trying to save the bridge for future generations.”

In recent weeks, city leaders, ODOT, and preservation advocates have collaborated to assess the bridge’s condition. Engineering assessments indicate that while the bridge shows visible deterioration, its critical components, such as the piers and arches, remain structurally sound.

Vision for the Future

Advocates for the bridge’s preservation, like Dr. Rex Childers of the Save the Bridge Association, are optimistic about its future. “We’ve tested the strength on it. The important parts are the piers and the arches. Those are strong,” Childers explained.

There is a vision to transform the bridge into a pedestrian and bicycle pathway, creating a unique attraction for the region. Janice Braida, a Waterville resident for 30 years, shared her hopes for the bridge’s future, envisioning it as a pedestrian and cycling path.

Next Steps and Considerations

Previously, ODOT had planned to demolish the bridge, citing the high costs of restoration. However, with new engineering insights, the agency is open to considering either demolition or a modified approach, depending on the city’s decision.

The Waterville City Council is set to discuss the bridge’s future, potential funding sources, and next steps at a meeting scheduled for June 8 at 7 p.m. in the Waterville Council Chambers. This meeting will be crucial in determining the bridge’s fate and the community’s role in its preservation.
