Washoe County Scales Back Wildfire Resource Center as Demand Decreases

Washoe County officials announced that the Wildfire Community Resource Center will close its doors at 6 p.m. on Monday, reflecting a decline in the number of residents seeking in‑person help. While the main center will scale back its operations, the county stressed that essential services will remain accessible through partner agencies and satellite sites.

Continued support from the Red Cross

A Red Cross representative will continue to staff the North Valleys Community Center through the end of the week. The representative will help residents schedule one‑on‑one appointments with local resource providers, ensuring that those still affected by the fires can receive personalized assistance.

Food assistance remains available

On Monday, the Mr. Yummy Yummy food truck will serve free chicken teriyaki bowls at the Wildfire Resource Center from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. In addition, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada will conduct a separate food distribution at the Stead Airport (4895 Texas Avenue) during the same hours.

Salvation Army offers additional resources

Residents can also obtain aid at the Salvation Army Community Center, located at 1931 Sutro St. in Reno. The center will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free meals will be served from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and clothing assistance will be available from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Salvation Army location is not accepting donations at this time.

Online recovery information

For a comprehensive list of recovery resources, residents are encouraged to visit emergencywashoe.com and select the “Recovery Resources” tab. The website provides up‑to‑date information on available services, eligibility criteria, and contact details for each partner organization.

County perspective

County officials noted that the reduction in hours reflects the gradual improvement in the community’s overall recovery status. “We are pleased to see fewer families needing emergency shelter and direct assistance,” said a spokesperson for the Washoe County Office of Emergency Management. “Nevertheless, we remain vigilant and will keep resources in place for anyone who still needs help.”

The county’s approach underscores a commitment to responsible stewardship of public resources while ensuring that vulnerable residents continue to receive the aid they need as the region moves toward full recovery.
