Louisville families and garden enthusiasts gathered Thursday at Wallitsch Garden Center for the third annual Blooms & Booze celebration, a fall‑time fundraiser aimed at supporting cancer recovery services in the community.
Fall festivities with a purpose
As the sun shifted toward the equator on Tuesday night, signaling the official start of astronomical fall, owner Jeff Wallitsch expressed his enthusiasm for the season. “It’s been miserable. We are ready to kind of have a refresh. Fall has great weather; you can create indoor spaces for fall. It’s just a great time of year when you can be outside and not sweat,” he said.
The event combined garden inspiration with a charitable cause. A portion of every purchase during the Blooms & Booze celebration was earmarked for Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana, a nonprofit that provides social‑emotional support and counseling to individuals and families affected by cancer.
Targeted help for those battling cancer
Lexi Smith, a representative of Gilda’s Club, explained how the donations would be used. “That’s 50 hours of counseling that we can cover for individuals or the financial assistance program I mentioned for pediatric patients; we offer $500, so that can serve 10 families impacted by a pediatric cancer diagnosis,” she said.
The fundraiser set an ambitious goal of raising $5,000. While the event is still underway, the community’s response has been encouraging, with many shoppers taking advantage of the 15 % discount on every plant in the center.
Garden tips for the season
Beyond the charitable aspect, Wallitsch used the gathering to share practical advice for preparing gardens for the cooler months. “There are great things you can do in the fall and into the fall; mulching your yard is great. You can kind of do a reset with that. Planting trees and perennials; fall is also a great time to do that,” he advised attendees.
Local gardeners left with fresh ideas for mulching, planting, and protecting their landscapes against winter weather, reinforcing the center’s role as a trusted resource for Louisville’s horticultural community.
Community impact
By linking seasonal gardening with a cause that touches many families, Wallitsch Garden Center demonstrated how local businesses can rally neighbors around both practical interests and compassionate outreach. The event underscores the importance of faith‑based and family‑centered nonprofits like Gilda’s Club, which rely on community generosity to continue their vital work.
As the evening wound down, shoppers carried home new plants, seasonal décor, and the satisfaction of contributing to a cause that helps cancer survivors and their families find hope and healing.
