Most Wake County students feel safe in school, according to a new survey. However, they believe several measures can be taken to enhance their safety. The top ways to improve security, as suggested by the students, include staff monitoring and ensuring external doors are always locked.
Survey Results
The survey, which was conducted among high school students, found that about 82% of the students generally feel safe at school. The students suggested that existing safety measures should be strengthened, and about 23% of them believed that artificial intelligence-powered weapons detectors for secondary school entryways would enhance their safety.
The survey also found that about 46% of the students believed that bathrooms need safety improvements, including staff monitoring to address vaping, smoking, and drug use, as well as fixing broken stall locks and managing fighting and bullying in the bathrooms.
Wake County school system leaders will present the survey results to the school board’s safety and security committee, along with updates on upcoming safety initiatives this school year.
