Volusia County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday night that deputies arrested 37‑year‑old Bradford Kanan after a multi‑agency pursuit near the Canaveral National Seashore. The incident began around 6 p.m. when deputies responded to a call about an unknown individual inside a vehicle at 6965 S. Atlantic Avenue.
Chase and K‑9 apprehension
When officers arrived, Kanan allegedly refused to exit his car and drove away, eventually reaching the boat‑ramp area of the national seashore. He bailed out of the vehicle and hid, prompting patrol deputies, a K‑9 unit, drone operators and the department’s Air One helicopter to join the search. The K‑9 located Kanan just before 9 p.m., and he was described as combative, fighting the dog during the apprehension.
Charges and next steps
Kanan claimed he possessed a weapon and threatened to shoot deputies, but no weapon was recovered. He now faces charges of aggravated assault, battery on a K‑9, fleeing and resisting, as well as a pending domestic‑violence warrant. After being placed on a stretcher, he was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being transferred to jail.
Additional details
A tow truck later removed a white pickup truck from the scene, and an off‑camera witness reported seeing the truck speed into the park. A deputy confirmed that no law‑enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
