DENISON, Texas – The Denison City Council announced that applications are now open for a variety of board and commission positions that will serve the community in 2025. Residents have until October 31 to submit their interest, either online or by contacting the City Clerk’s Office.
Why the city needs volunteers
Emily Agans, Director of Communications and Marketing for the city, emphasized the dual purpose of the openings: “There is a great need that we have, but there’s also a great opportunity for our residents to serve. If you want to get involved, this is a great way to do so.” She noted that many of the boards act in an advisory capacity, offering citizens a direct line to city staff and council members.
What volunteers can expect
Each board and commission has its own eligibility criteria, but all share a common goal of informing local policy. “A lot of our boards and commissions are advisory in nature to our staff and to our city council, so you’ll be able to share your opinion, share what you know about the city, share what you think might be good, what might not be so good,” Agans explained. “Local government is where things happen, where decisions are made, and our boards and commissions are vital in that process.”
How to apply
The application asks a few basic questions about the applicant’s background, but prior experience is not required. “Don’t let that stop you if you haven’t,” Agans said. “If you just feel like you want to give back and are interested in a topic, that’s enough. We just want to hear from you, want to know if you’re interested.” Applicants may be invited to interview to determine the best fit for each seat, and the City Council will make final appointments after the deadline.
Open positions
The city listed openings on more than a dozen boards and commissions, ranging from planning and zoning to parks and recreation, economic development, and public safety advisory groups. Detailed descriptions of each opening are available on the City of Denison’s website.
Community impact
Agans stressed the importance of civic participation: “It’s so important that your voice is heard.” By serving on a board or commission, residents can directly influence decisions that affect daily life—such as neighborhood improvements, community events, and local services.
Next steps for interested residents
Those interested should review the specific openings on the city’s website, complete the online application, or request a paper form from the City Clerk’s Office. The deadline for all applications is October 31, after which the selection process will begin.
Denison’s call for volunteers reflects a broader push across Texas municipalities to engage citizens in local governance, reinforcing the principle that strong families and faith‑based communities thrive when they have a voice in the decisions that shape their neighborhoods.
