In Atlantic City, New Jersey, an annual tradition has made a big splash in the local community. Each year, volunteers hop in the ocean to share the ‘Heart of Surfing’ with kids with disabilities.
A Nonprofit’s Mission
The nonprofit’s mission is to ensure people of all abilities can be included out on the water. Co-Founder and Director Cindy Fertsch started the program for her son Jamie, who was on the autism spectrum. Although Jamie passed away in 2020, the program continues in his honor.
‘We’re all just here to lift one another… I’m honored to be a part of it because I get to know some of the coolest kids in the world,’ Fertsch said.
