West Hollywood homes still uninhabitable a month after massive water main break

West Hollywood officials repaired a major water main on Sunset Boulevard on July 24, but the damage caused by the July 2026 rupture continues to keep several residences and a neighborhood café out of use. The break released roughly 17 million gallons of water, creating a sinkhole, flooding sidewalks, underground parking structures and nearby storefronts.

Residents still displaced

One affected resident, who asked that his last name not be disclosed, described a month of hardship. He said two of his cars were destroyed when the water inundated his underground garage, and he has been staying in a hotel for 29 days because his apartment complex remains uninhabitable. “I just want to go home,” he said. “I just want to sleep in my own bed. I just want to resume my life, but there are too many obstacles right now.”

Local business faces long rebuild

Dialog Café, located a short distance from the break site, suffered extensive interior damage. Co‑owner Narbeh Gahzalian told reporters that the café will likely need more than a year to rebuild. Both the resident and Gahzalian have filed insurance claims and have also submitted claims to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).

Gahzalian noted that the claims process itself has become a full‑time job, saying, “One of the things that’s underestimated is how long it takes to go through the claims process.” LADWP confirmed it has received 98 claims related to the incident and aims to reach a final decision on each within 30‑45 days, though timelines can vary based on claim complexity.

City response and next steps

City officials coordinated with LADWP and local emergency services to clear the sinkhole, repair the broken pipe and reopen the affected streets. While the primary water line was restored after a week of nonstop work, secondary infrastructure—such as damaged sidewalks and underground parking—requires separate remediation. The city has not provided a definitive schedule for completing those repairs.

Residents are encouraged to continue filing claims through LADWP’s online portal and to keep documentation of property loss, temporary housing expenses and vehicle damage. The department’s website offers step‑by‑step guidance for claim submission.

Impact on the community

The incident underscores the vulnerability of aging water infrastructure in densely populated urban areas. Local homeowners and business owners alike are facing significant financial burdens while awaiting insurance payouts and municipal repairs. Community groups have begun organizing informational meetings to help affected parties navigate the claims process and to advocate for faster infrastructure upgrades.

As West Hollywood works to restore the affected properties, city leaders say they remain committed to ensuring that residents can safely return to their homes and that local businesses can reopen as soon as possible.
