Vitamin C is known for its numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation and cancer risks. Two new studies have further highlighted the importance of vitamin C in our daily lives. The first study, published in PLOSOne, found that older adults with lower blood levels of vitamin C had symptoms of reduced cognitive function and measurable loss of brain volume and structural integrity of the gray matter, impacting memory and decision-making.
Vitamin C and Cancer Risks
The second study, published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, used mathematic modeling to reveal that taking a vitamin C supplement could partially reduce the presence of a cancer-risky chemical that forms in the body after consuming nitrates and nitrites in processed red meats. The recommended dietary allowance is 90 milligrams for men and 75 milligrams for women age 19 and older. Foods rich in vitamin C include berries, leafy greens, and citrus fruits.
