Fourth of July celebrations across the country were marred by violence, resulting in at least six deaths and scores of injuries in multiple cities. The incidents included shootings and explosions that took place in various locations, including Brooklyn, New York; Pensacola, Florida; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Gary, Indiana; Compton, California; Dayton, Ohio; Canton, Ohio; St. Louis, Missouri; and Chino, California.
Incidents Across the US
In Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, a man wearing a black ski mask opened fire on a family barbecue late Saturday night, wounding at least eight people, including four children. A 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest.
In Florida, a 19-year-old was killed and six others were wounded by gunfire in downtown Pensacola after 1 a.m. Sunday. The shooting appeared targeted, and no one is in custody. Many young people, some as young as middle-school age, were out unaccompanied that evening.
A shooting in Fort Wayne, Indiana, left one woman dead and eight adults with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. In Gary, Indiana, police responded to two separate shootings early Sunday, one of which killed a 10-year-old boy.
In Compton, California, a woman and a man were killed, and three others were injured at a large Fourth of July party. In Dayton, Ohio, four people were injured in a shooting on the evening of July 3 in the Oregon District.
In Canton, Ohio, a 46-year-old woman was shot in the back while asleep in bed after a suspect fired weapons into the air to celebrate the holiday. The suspect, Darius J. Leishman, was arrested and charged with felonious assault and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation.
In St. Louis, Missouri, a 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting around 12 a.m. Saturday. In Chino, California, a fireworks explosion killed one person and critically injured two others.
