Vietnam Veteran Reflects on Survival at Lexington Memorial Day Service

In Lexington, Kentucky, the annual Memorial Day service at Lexington Cemetery drew attendees who came to honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our nation. Among them was Brian Engle, a Vietnam veteran, who attended the ceremony with his wife, taking their familiar spot to pay tribute to fallen heroes.

Service and Sacrifice

Engle, who served as a Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, chose to enlist out of a sense of duty while others were being drafted. His journey began with a ground assignment as a technical specialist, where he faced constant danger. After 15 months, he retrained as an Aerial Gunner, flying B-52s, a role that brought its own set of challenges and risks.

During his first year in Vietnam, Engle was wounded, an experience that left a lasting impact on him. Upon returning from the hospital, he learned of the tragic loss of a high school friend who had been serving in the same area. This loss is something Engle carries with him, particularly on Memorial Day, as he reflects on the sacrifices made by his fellow servicemen and women.

Reflecting on Fortune

Engle acknowledges that his presence at the ceremony is due to fortune, as he survived situations where others did not. He humbly attributes his survival to the luck of the draw, noting that while the local guerrillas, the Vietcong, were not always accurate, they could be fortunate at times.

The ceremony at Lexington Cemetery serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in the armed forces. For Engle and many others, it is a day to honor the memory of friends and comrades who did not return, and to reflect on the blessings of life and freedom.
