Veteran Sean Michael Lee honored for lifelong humanitarian service

Sean Michael Lee, a retired Army paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, spent his post‑military career serving vulnerable communities around the world. His longtime colleague, Steven Rozina, deputy chief operating officer of the nonprofit Independence Fund, recalled Lee’s unwavering commitment to aid, saying, “His entire life was in service to others. Up until the very end, Sean was always thinking of others.”

From Afghanistan to Ukraine

When the United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, Lee answered the call once again. He helped evacuate thousands of Afghan allies who had worked with U.S. forces, ensuring they reached safety and could continue their lives abroad. Shortly thereafter, as Russia invaded Ukraine, Lee traveled to Poland, where he assisted in establishing aid stations and supply lines for displaced Ukrainians.

Rescuing a fellow journalist

Lee’s dedication extended to fellow members of the press. In early 2024, Fox News reporter Benjamin Hall was seriously injured near Kyiv during a Russian attack. Coordinating through the nonprofit Save Our Allies, Lee organized the rescue operation that brought Hall home safely, demonstrating his ability to mobilize resources quickly and effectively.

Hurricane Helene response in North Carolina

In 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated the western mountains of North Carolina, Lee’s home state. Within hours, he was on the road, traveling to the affected communities. He and Rozina spent nights in their cars, setting up aid distribution points and assisting families in rebuilding homes and a vital family‑owned store. When many volunteers returned home, Lee stayed, living in tents and continuing hands‑on reconstruction work.

Legacy of preparedness

Lee’s philosophy, which he described as a “send me” ethos, centered on preparedness and the belief that even small acts of service add up. He constantly planned for future emergencies, asking, “If another hurricane hits, how are we going to respond? If an earthquake occurs, where are we going to go and how can we be more efficient?”

Final sacrifice

Lee passed away on Tuesday after a battle with cancer linked to toxic burn‑pit exposure during his deployments in the Middle East. Even in his final weeks, he was texting plans for the next mission, embodying his lifelong dedication to helping others.

Rozina summed up Lee’s impact: “You might feel like you’re not doing much, but doing something means a lot. Do the best you can when you’re doing it, and do it with a grateful heart. Sean did the best he could at everything, and those little things add up in the end.”
