VA Grants Over $11.5 Million to Wyoming Groups to Help Homeless Veterans

The Sheridan VA Health Care Center announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded more than $11.5 million in grant funding to three Wyoming nonprofit organizations. The money will support veterans who are currently homeless or whose housing situation is precarious during fiscal year 2027.

Record‑high federal investment

This allocation is part of a historic $1.17 billion grant program that the VA has distributed to 680 community groups across the United States. The goal of the nationwide effort is to eradicate veteran homelessness, a mission that has already seen measurable progress. In fiscal year 2025, the VA reported housing 51,936 homeless veterans – the highest total in seven years.

How the grants will be used

Two VA programs will manage the new funds. The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program will provide resources for transitional housing, case management, and other intensive supportive services. Meanwhile, the Grant and Per Diem (GPD) program will fund short‑term housing and per‑diem allowances for veterans transitioning from shelters or emergency housing to permanent residences.

Local leaders say the grants will strengthen existing partnerships with community agencies that already serve Wyoming’s veteran population. “The Sheridan VA Health Care System is committed to ensuring veterans have access to safe, stable housing and the supportive services they need to thrive,” said Stephen Petzold, Acting Director of the Sheridan VA Health Care System. “These grants strengthen our partnerships with community organizations and help us reach veterans where they are, providing resources that make a meaningful difference in their lives.”

Who will receive the funding

The VA has identified three Wyoming organizations to receive the awards. While the full list of awardees is available on the VA’s website, each recipient will be responsible for delivering a portion of the SSVF and GPD services in their respective service areas. The grants are expected to create additional beds for transitional housing, expand counseling and employment assistance, and improve access to health‑care navigation for veterans.

Why the investment matters to Wyoming families

Veteran homelessness is not just a federal concern; it directly impacts families and communities throughout the Cowboy State. When veterans secure stable housing, they are better able to reunite with families, find employment, and contribute to the local economy. The infusion of federal dollars also supports Wyoming nonprofit groups that rely on grant funding to maintain and expand their programs.

Local officials have praised the VA’s commitment, noting that the partnership aligns with Wyoming’s broader effort to support veterans through job training, health‑care access, and community integration. The grants complement state‑level initiatives aimed at improving veteran services and underscore the importance of collaboration between federal agencies and grassroots organizations.

Looking ahead

The VA plans to continue monitoring the impact of the grants throughout FY 2027, with periodic reporting on housing placements, service utilization, and outcomes for veterans. Stakeholders hope that the additional resources will accelerate progress toward the VA’s long‑term goal of ending veteran homelessness nationwide.
