A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck near the northern coast of Venezuela on Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake happened 28 kilometers northwest of Montalbán, an area with some of the country’s largest refineries.
Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, including the coasts of Bonaire, Venezuela, Curacao, and Aruba, according to the US Tsunami Warning Centers. There is also a tsunami threat to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The earthquake was felt in the capital Caracas, where residents were seen evacuating buildings and gathering in the street. Videos showed damaged buildings with missing walls and dust covering some neighborhoods in the city.
