Cody Matthewson, former head coach at AC/GC, has joined Van Meter as the head strength and conditioning coach. He will also serve as the head boys track coach in the spring. His dad, Kurt Matthewson, will be an assistant coach, handling the offensive line and linebackers.

Family Ties

Cody and Kurt Matthewson are not new to coaching together. Kurt was an assistant coach under his son at AC/GC for eight years and also spent 23 years as an assistant at Madrid. When Cody made the move to Van Meter, Kurt wasn’t sure if he’d continue coaching, but was convinced by Cody and Van Meter’s head coach Eric Trudo to join the team.

Kurt will coach the offensive line and linebackers, while Cody will coach linebackers and running backs, and serve as the special teams coordinator. The father-son duo is excited to work together again and be a part of the Van Meter team.

Van Meter had a successful season last year, going 10-3 and making it to the 2A state championship game. The team returns half of their starters on offense and defense and is looking to build on last year’s success.
