A man has been charged after allegedly spraying two firefighters with bear spray at a Newport fire station early Wednesday, according to court records.

A woman with facial injuries ran into the fire station around 1 a.m. to seek help. Moments later, a man entered the station carrying a can of bear spray, claiming he had a gun. The man, identified as Jacob Palmer, 49, sprayed two firefighters with the bear spray. The firefighters fought back against Palmer, hitting him with an oxygen tank.
Palmer was taken into custody and described as sweating profusely, talking excessively, and acting erratically. He told officials that people were chasing him and trying to kill him. Palmer was found to be high on a controlled substance.
The woman had met Palmer at a smoke shop on Tuesday night and said he began to freak out. She claimed Palmer was driving at excessive speeds and she was not let out of the vehicle. The woman jumped from the vehicle while it was still in motion to get away from Palmer and sustained multiple lacerations and road rash.
Palmer has been charged with unlawful imprisonment, wanton endangerment, burglary, assault on fire, EMS or rescue squad, and public intoxication.
