In Phoenix, a collaborative effort is underway to support first-year teachers in Title I schools by providing them with essential classroom supplies. This initiative, led by 12News in partnership with Teach For America, Amazon, and the Arizona Diamondbacks, seeks to alleviate the financial burden often faced by educators who purchase supplies out of their own pockets.
Supporting Local Educators
The campaign, which began on June 5 and will run through August 1, focuses on equipping new Teach For America educators in the Phoenix area with the necessary tools to start the school year successfully. These teachers often work in some of Arizona’s highest-need communities, where resources are limited and the demand for educational materials is high.
Donations can be made by purchasing items from the Pitch In for Teachers Amazon wish list or by contributing directly on the Teach For America website. The goal is to fulfill supply requests for approximately 100-120 first-year teachers across 40-50 Title I schools in the Valley. These schools serve communities where many students face economic challenges, making the availability of classroom resources crucial for student success.
Community Involvement
As part of the initiative, Teach For America teachers will receive classroom supply boxes before the school year begins. Community volunteers from Amazon, 12News, and the Arizona Diamondbacks will participate in a special event to assemble these supply boxes, which will then be distributed to teachers throughout the Valley. A special presentation at Chase Field later this summer will recognize the teachers’ contributions.
Kate Morris, President and General Manager of 12News, emphasized the importance of investing in educators, stating, “When we invest in teachers, we invest in the future of Arizona.” This sentiment underscores the campaign’s commitment to supporting local educators and, by extension, the students and communities they serve.
By contributing to this campaign, donors are not only helping teachers but also investing in the future of Arizona’s children. The initiative highlights the power of community collaboration in addressing educational needs and supporting those who dedicate their lives to teaching.
