July is UV Safety Awareness Month, and Dr. Kerry Hennessy, a board-certified dermatologist affiliated with Jupiter Medical Center, stopped by our studio to talk more about how to avoid UV exposure and stay safe in the sun.
Protecting Yourself from UV Rays
Dr. Hennessy emphasized the importance of using sunscreen every single day, even when not planning to spend time outdoors. She also recommended wearing long-sleeved shirts, big hats, and physical protection to prevent UV exposure.
Dr. Hennessy discussed the risks of skin cancer, particularly for people who spend a lot of time in the sun, those with fair skin, and individuals with red hair. She advised being aware of changes in skin spots and getting regular screenings, at least once a year, unless you’re high-risk.
Dr. Hennessy also shared her thoughts on the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to UV protection, including not reapplying sunscreen every two hours. She suggested using hats and long-sleeved shirts as an alternative to frequent reapplication.
