UTSA Roadrunners face No. 1 Texas Longhorns in high‑stakes I‑35 showdown

On Saturday night the UTSA Roadrunners will travel to Austin to take on the No. 1‑ranked Texas Longhorns at Darrell K. Royal‑Texas Memorial Stadium. The Roadrunners enter the game 2‑0 after victories over UT‑Rio Grande Valley and Texas State, while Texas also boasts a 2‑0 start, fresh off a dramatic 24‑23 comeback win over Ohio State.

Financial gap fuels coach’s concerns

Roadrunners head coach Jeff Traylor warned that the widening budget gap in college football makes games against powerhouse programs increasingly hard to justify. “You just can’t play guys that get paid $50‑55 million dollars,” Traylor said, referring to the estimated roster spending of elite programs. He added, “We got to get in the $20 million dollar ranges … we got to get out of the business of playing A&M, LSU, and Texas.”

According to The Athletic, Texas’ football roster budget this season is roughly $45‑55 million, while UTSA operates with an estimated $4.5‑5 million. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian cautioned that those figures are difficult to verify because the underlying numbers are not fully public.

Money on the line for UTSA

Beyond the competitive challenge, the game carries a significant financial incentive for the Roadrunners. Texas has agreed to pay UTSA $1.7 million for the Saturday matchup as part of a multi‑game scheduling agreement between the two schools.

Traylor also highlighted the physical toll such contests can exact. “You just pray you come home Saturday healthy,” he said. “They’re just so much bigger and so much more powerful than us.” He noted that past meetings have resulted in injuries and losses for UTSA, emphasizing the need for a careful approach.

History of the Battle for I‑35

This will be the third meeting between the programs. In 2022 UTSA surprised Texas by taking a 17‑7 lead in the second quarter and entering halftime tied at 17‑17 before Texas pulled away for a 41‑20 victory. Two years later Texas widened the margin, winning 56‑7.

The upcoming contest marks the first time UTSA will face a team ranked No. 1 in both the AP Top 25 and the AFCA Coaches Poll. The game also arrives amid ongoing debates over name‑image‑likeness (NIL) compensation and revenue sharing, issues that have further widened the financial divide between major and emerging programs.

Coach Traylor’s Texas ties

Traylor’s connection to the Longhorns runs deep; he served on Texas’ coaching staff in 2015 and 2016 before taking the helm at UTSA. His insider perspective adds another layer to the rivalry, as he knows both the culture of the powerhouse program and the challenges faced by a growing regional school.

The game will be streamed exclusively on SEC Network+ via the ESPN app, offering fans a chance to watch the Roadrunners take on the nation’s top team and see how the financial realities of modern college football play out on the field.
