Gaza Artists Paint Macklemore Mural After He Is Dropped From Ed Sheeran Tour

Gaza City – In a striking act of solidarity, local artists painted a massive concrete mural of rapper Macklemore wrapped in a Palestinian flag. The mural, placed against ruined buildings in the city’s devastated center, shows the “Thrift Shop” artist raising a fist, with the caption, “Thank you for using your voice for Palestine.”

Artists Explain Their Motivation

Anne Redwan, 26, who designed and painted the piece with fellow artist Qusai al‑Helo, told Reuters, “As an artist living under siege here in Gaza, we are waiting for support from anyone who can see the persecution we live under. We can paint murals bigger than this to express our feelings.” The mural is intended as a simple thank‑you to Macklemore for his long‑standing support of Palestinian causes.

Why Macklemore Was Removed From the Tour

Macklemore was cut from British pop star Ed Sheeran’s upcoming tour after he criticized Israel’s military assault on Gaza during a previous performance. Sheeran said stadium owners would not allow Macklemore to appear, and U.S. billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, reportedly barred him for alleged antisemitism – a charge the rapper denies.

Celebrity Donations Spark Hope for Gaza

Following the tour controversy, Macklemore announced he will donate his $1 million net earnings from the tour to six aid groups operating in Gaza. Kraft said Sheeran had pledged $2 million for regional aid and asked him to match it, though Sheeran has not commented on any donation. Children’s TV personality Ms. Rachel matched Macklemore’s pledge with an additional $1 million.

UNICEF local official Toby Fricker emphasized the importance of sustained assistance, stating, “What’s really most important is that people who have been so generous keep fighting over a sustained time, not one‑off peaks, but sustained support.” Humanitarian leader Hussein Murtaja added that Macklemore’s public solidarity matters as much as the money, helping raise awareness for a political solution and lasting peace.

Gaza’s Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis

Nearly a year after a cease‑fire halted major fighting, reconstruction in Gaza remains stalled. Most of the enclave’s buildings are destroyed, and more than two million residents are confined to a third of the territory, living in tents or crowded rooms within damaged structures. A U.S.‑brokered plan to end the war has stalled, with negotiators unable to agree on conditions for Hamas disarmament and Israeli troop withdrawal.

Aid agencies warn that while celebrity attention can boost donations, the region still relies heavily on continuous humanitarian assistance for food, water, medical care and shelter. The mural stands as a visual reminder of the ongoing struggle and the hope that international voices will continue to advocate for Gaza’s people.
