The University of Texas at El Paso College of Education recently hosted the Built Here Summit, where over 100 leaders discussed the future of artificial intelligence in El Paso’s education system. The summit aimed to create a framework for preparing students and workers for the future economy.
Focus on People, Not Just Technology
According to Clifton Tanabe, the College of Education’s dean, the focus should be on people, not just the technology itself. ‘Conversations about AI focus so much on the technology and platforms being utilized, but we know that at the end of the day it is our people we need to focus on,’ Tanabe said.
Workforce leaders from Microsoft and Workforce Solutions Borderplex shared their insights on practices and policies that businesses can use to protect workers from being displaced by AI. Catherine Tabor, president of the Computer Science Teachers Association, emphasized that AI is a tool for educators and students, but it cannot replace human teachers. ‘Educators are still needed in the classroom to introduce students to the pursuit of knowledge and a love of learning,’ Tabor said.
