Utah Republican Sen. John Curtis urges Senate Judiciary to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden

Utah Republican Sen. John Curtis is pressing Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R‑Iowa) and Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D‑Illinois) to issue subpoenas for Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden. In a letter posted on X, Curtis argues that the Senate should examine whether the families of a sitting president and a former president have leveraged their relationships for private financial benefit, preferential treatment, or foreign access.

Call for a bipartisan investigation

Curtis frames the request as a matter of fairness, stating, “The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president. Nor should congressional oversight begin and end when control of the White House changes hands.” He urges the Judiciary Committee to investigate past business dealings, foreign relationships, gifts, and any instances where family connections were invoked for value.

Background on the allegations

The push follows Curtis’ video remarks about reports that a Russian oligarch allegedly funded Donald Trump Jr.’s two‑day wedding after‑party in May. Curtis called those reports “corruption” and said they merit further scrutiny. President Donald Trump recently said his son repaid the oligarch for the after‑party costs, though no public evidence of that repayment has been presented.

President Trump told reporters, “As I understand it, he paid them back. He didn’t want to have that, so I hear he paid them back. A person that he knows pretty, I guess a friend of his, gave him a wedding party. That’s very common.” The president emphasized equal treatment for all families, regardless of party.

Hunter Biden’s prior scrutiny

Hunter Biden, the youngest son of former President Joe Biden, has long faced Republican inquiries over alleged business with foreign entities while his father held public office. Critics have pointed to his board seat at Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, and claims that a Ukrainian oligarch pressured the Biden family for financial gain. No charges have been filed.

Specific concerns cited by Curtis

In his letter, Curtis highlights several areas of concern:

  • Donald Trump Jr.’s promotion of family‑backed cryptocurrency ventures.
  • His pursuit of international real estate deals involving direct meetings with foreign heads of state.
  • Reported investments in defense contracting.
  • Hunter Biden’s substantial business with foreign entities while his father served as vice president.

Curtis argues that these activities raise legitimate questions about foreign access to members of a sitting president’s family and the potential for perceived or actual expectations of favorable treatment, which could threaten national security and the interests of the American people and our allies.

Political context

Although Curtis does not sit on the Judiciary Committee and will not vote on any subpoena, his letter represents the most direct admonishment from a Republican lawmaker regarding the Trump Jr. wedding reports. The request underscores ongoing partisan debates over accountability and transparency for presidential families.

What comes next?

The Judiciary Committee will decide whether to open a formal investigation and issue subpoenas. If pursued, the inquiry could set a precedent for how Congress oversees the financial activities of presidential relatives, reinforcing the principle that no family should be above the law.
