South Shore — On Tuesday, local leaders and residents gathered at the corner of 7800 S. South Shore Drive to officially rename the block in honor of Donda West, the late mother of Grammy‑winning artist Kanye West. The ceremony featured a cappella recordings of a young Kanye and remarks from Alderman Greg Mitchell (7th Ward), who called West’s impact “far beyond the block, far beyond Chicago and far beyond her lifetime.”
Celebrating a Lifelong Educator
Donda West spent nearly three decades as a professor at Chicago State University, where she chaired the English department and founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing. “She created a home where young writers, thinkers and artists could discover their voice and their power,” Mitchell said.
Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon presented a county resolution recognizing West’s contributions to education, youth mentorship and the arts, noting that her “enduring legacy of inspiring and empowering generations through scholarship, creativity and service” continues to shape the community.
Community Voices Remember Her Influence
Garrard McClendon, a former colleague and Chicago State professor who nominated West for the honor, described her as having “left an indelible imprint on the landscape of education, art and culture in Chicago.” He added that West built her career on the belief that “education can change the direction of a young person’s life.”
Che “Rhymefest” Smith, a longtime Chicago artist, recalled how West’s home was a place of support: “What I couldn’t get at school, I could get at Donda’s house.” Leonard “GLC” Harris, another Chicago‑born rapper who grew up nearby, called West “a beacon of light” who invited neighborhood kids into her home and gave them love, knowledge and confidence.

Kanye West, wearing dark shades, attended the ceremony alongside local officials but did not speak publicly. His presence underscored the personal significance of the tribute, as West has frequently credited his mother for the resilience, determination and integrity that shaped his artistic career.

Mitchell said the honorary street name will serve as a permanent reminder that greatness can be homegrown. “Every single young person who walks this block will see her name and know that greatness is not distant; it is right here,” he said.
The former West residence still stands at 7815 S. South Shore Drive, a tangible link to the family’s deep roots in the neighborhood.
