A staff member at the University of Texas at Arlington is no longer employed by the university after a hidden-camera video surfaced in which she discussed diversity, equity and inclusion within social work academic programs with someone who was posing as a prospective student.
The recording, released by Accuracy in Media, features former social work academic recruiter Melissa Cruz answering questions from the undercover individual. Accuracy in Media is a conservative advocacy group that has used hidden cameras and staged encounters to highlight what it calls “radical ideology” in higher education.
In the video, the person posing as an applicant asks whether professors still teach material related to DEI without using the specific language that could create problems. Cruz responds that such content must still be covered, saying, “We still have to cover the content, obviously, because it’s a huge part of what we do.”
UTA issued a statement saying the university is aware of the video, that it will remain compliant with federal and state laws and UT System policies, and that it took prompt steps to investigate. The university added that the comments in the video do not reflect university policy or practice and confirmed the employee shown is no longer employed by UTA.
The recruiter did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Separately, the Texas attorney general has opened an investigation into another university after a similar undercover video circulated there; that university has also said the employee shown in its video is no longer employed.
