USS Constellation Honored with Preservation Award After Major Renovation

The USS Constellation, a cherished historic vessel docked in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, has been awarded the Maryland Preservation Award for Excellence in Restoration. This recognition follows a $1 million renovation project spearheaded by the Living Classrooms Foundation and its Historic Ships in Baltimore division. The project, which focused on the ship’s rigging, was the first comprehensive conservation effort since 1999.

Preservation Efforts Recognized

On Wednesday, the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) presented the award to Steve Bountress, executive director of Historic Ships in Baltimore, at a ceremony held on the roof of the Constellation’s education center. Elizabeth Hughes, MHT Director, highlighted the project’s significance as it involved a floating vessel rather than a traditional building, making it the only maritime restoration project recognized this year.

The USS Constellation, the last sail-only warship designed and built by the U.S. Navy, plays a vital role in Baltimore’s maritime heritage. The recent restoration ensures the vessel is in prime condition for the upcoming SAIL250 Maryland and Airshow Baltimore, a weeklong event celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The Constellation will anchor the celebrations alongside fourteen other tall ships, welcoming visitors for tours from June 24 to 30.

Community and Educational Impact

The restoration project not only preserved the ship’s historical integrity but also served as an educational platform. The Living Classrooms Foundation incorporated its Maritime Workforce Skills Training Program, providing hands-on training for participants. The project was conducted in full public view, allowing students, residents, and visitors to observe and learn about traditional maritime trades.

Hughes emphasized the importance of preserving the USS Constellation as an educational resource and a symbol of Maryland’s maritime heritage. The project involved the complete removal, inspection, conservation, and replacement of major rigging components, using traditional techniques and historically appropriate materials to maintain the ship’s authenticity.

Funding for the renovation primarily came from the State of Maryland, supplemented by fundraising efforts from Living Classrooms and Historic Ships. The successful completion of this project ensures that the USS Constellation will continue to be a centerpiece of Baltimore’s waterfront and a testament to the city’s rich maritime history.
