The Five Eyes intelligence alliance, comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, has issued a joint statement warning that AI models capable of launching major cyberattacks are months away from being developed.
AI Cyber Threats
The alliance urged governments and corporate leaders to improve their defenses against sophisticated cyber threats, citing the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence as a major concern. According to the statement, AI models are anticipated to exceed current industry expectations, fundamentally transforming both offensive and defensive cyber capabilities.
Experts have expressed concerns over the advancing technology, which the Five Eyes leaders described as being able to lower barriers for malicious actors and increase the speed and complexity of attacks. The US administration has taken action against AI giant Anthropic, ordering it to suspend the use of its most advanced models by foreign nationals.
To counter the threat, businesses and leaders should invest in cyber defenses, upgrade old systems or patch faulty software, and limit who has access to critical systems, the Five Eyes leaders said. They also emphasized that AI is part of the solution, as organizations that integrate AI tools into their security operations can detect vulnerabilities earlier, improve software quality, monitor unusual behavior, and respond faster to incidents.
Small and medium-sized businesses are particularly vulnerable to these threats, as they may not have the resources to invest in robust cybersecurity measures. The Five Eyes alliance warned that these businesses will be like sitting ducks if they do not take action to improve their defenses.
