U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is working towards striking interim trade agreements with Mexico and Canada by the end of the year. Greer stated that key U.S. objectives, including changes to automotive rules of origin and stronger labor and environmental standards, will take more time to negotiate.
USMCA Negotiations
Greer will be traveling to Mexico City for USMCA talks with Mexican officials, including President Claudia Sheinbaum. The U.S. Trade Representative hopes to have options for President Donald Trump, Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to consider by the end of the year.
The trade pact has defined North America’s economy for 32 years, underpinning nearly $1.6 trillion in regional trade. Mexico and Canada send the vast majority of their exports to the United States.
