Missouri’s 1960 team finished with a 10-1 record, with their only loss coming to Kansas in a game that decided the Big Eight Conference title. However, the league later ordered Kansas to forfeit the game due to recruiting violations.
The recognition adds another layer to the complex history of college football’s national championships, which were decided by polls and rankings before the introduction of the Bowl Championship Series and the current College Football Playoff system.
Other teams that have been recognized as national champions for the 1960 season include Minnesota, Mississippi, Washington, and Iowa.
