US-Saudi Nuclear Deal Raises Proliferation Concerns

A recent US-Saudi nuclear deal has raised concerns about the potential for nuclear proliferation in the region. The deal, announced on July 22, 2026, may allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium, which could be used to produce nuclear weapons.

Nuclear Ambitions

Saudi Arabia has long expressed interest in developing its nuclear capabilities, including the ability to enrich uranium. The country’s energy minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, has stated that Saudi Arabia wants to use a complete fuel cycle to develop nuclear fuel for its planned commercial power reactors.

The deal has sparked concerns among nonproliferation experts, who warn that allowing Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium could lead to a nuclear arms race in the region. The deal’s terms are not yet clear, but it is believed that the US may have included provisions to limit Saudi Arabia’s ability to enrich uranium.

Proliferation Risks

The risk of nuclear proliferation in the region is high, given Saudi Arabia’s history of tensions with Iran, which has been accused of pursuing nuclear weapons. The deal has also raised concerns about the potential for Saudi Arabia to develop a latent nuclear weapons capability, which would allow the country to quickly produce a nuclear weapon if it chose to do so.

To mitigate these risks, the US has suggested implementing a ‘black box’ enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia, which would be owned and operated by the US. This would limit Saudi Arabia’s access to enrichment technology and reduce the risk of the country diverting low-enriched uranium from a civilian program to produce nuclear weapons.
