US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently concluded a three-day, three-nation trip to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain, aiming to reassure Gulf Arab partners of the US commitment to their security and stability.
Gulf Arab Concerns
Rubio addressed concerns that the US might leave its Gulf Arab partners out of discussions regarding the Iran agreement. He emphasized that the US values the input of its Gulf Arab partners and will not make decisions that undermine their prosperity, stability, or security.
The joint statement released after the meeting highlighted areas of agreement on the end goals of the Iran agreement, including preventing Iran from developing or acquiring a nuclear weapon and opposing any attempt by Iran to impose tolls or assert control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Joint Statement
The statement also welcomed an Omani initiative to create a safe lane to evacuate stranded sailors from the waterway and stressed that any economic benefit Iran might realize is conditional and reversible, contingent on Iran’s compliance with the temporary agreement and a final deal.
Despite the joint statement’s positive tone, the Gulf Cooperation Council secretary, General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, hinted that doubts remain, emphasizing the need for future arrangements to incorporate the requirements of the Gulf council countries to safeguard their interests and ensure their security and stability.
