A large and growing outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh food or water, is affecting the US. As of last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified nearly 7,000 cases of domestic cyclosporiasis this season, with 1,645 cases confirmed and about 5,100 others undergoing further analysis.
Outbreak Details
The CDC has linked 1,644 cases to a specific outbreak centered in the Midwest, with five states – Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia – reporting cases linked to the outbreak. Michigan has reported the most cases, with 6,571 cases of cyclosporiasis during the investigation timeframe.
The outbreak is likely linked to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms, which has been recalled. The contaminated lettuce was served at some Taco Bell locations. The CDC recommends that people not eat any shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico served at Taco Bell locations in states with cases linked to the outbreak.
Cyclosporiasis symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, and increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. At least 94 people have been hospitalized in relation to the current outbreak, with no deaths reported.
