The United States Department of State convened international governments for a global summit focused on countering the transnational rise in far-left political terrorism. Led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism brought together representatives from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, and Asia.
Far-Left Terrorism On The Rise
According to a State Department fact sheet, the summit aims to expand international coordination, enhance information-sharing, and strengthen law enforcement mechanisms among partner nations. U.S. officials characterized the current threat as one marked by violent attacks targeting private citizens, government officials, law enforcement personnel, businesses, and critical infrastructure.
Far-left anti-government terrorism currently accounts for more plots and attacks in the United States than any other ideological category. The department reported that far-left actors were responsible for 63% of all recorded anti-government attacks or plots in the U.S. in 2025, as well as three out of the four fatalities resulting from those incidents.
International Cooperation
To counter these activities, the State Department has previously designated four violent far-left groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists, with additional group designations currently under review. In December 2025, the department offered rewards of up to $10 million through its Rewards for Justice program for information leading to the disruption of financial networks supporting these designated groups.
