President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that an American woman, Dena Karari, who had been wrongfully detained in Iran since December 2024, has been released. Karari operated a non-profit called the Children of Mehr Foundation, which helped impoverished children in Iran with private donor support and authorization of an OFAC license. She was subjected to a coercive exit ban and was interrogated dozens of times by Iranian authorities. Genser said Karari suffered enormous physical and psychological hardship during her time in Iran.

The US government was tracking at least six Americans detained in Iran as of last month, including two who had been designated as wrongfully detained. Trump’s announcement comes as the US military continues to strike Iran.
