The United States and over a dozen allied nations reported that Russian hackers stole emails from users of the Zimbra email program without using social engineering tactics.
Russian Hacking Campaign
The hackers, known as Laundry Bear, exploited a weakness in Zimbra software to compromise email accounts, according to cybersecurity firm Proofpoint. The hacking campaign targeted Ukraine before hitting users in the US and other NATO member countries.
British Security Minister Dan Jarvis expressed concern that the hackers tested their methods on victims in Ukraine before targeting NATO members. The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The US and its allies have accused Laundry Bear of being a Russian government-supported hacking group. A US indictment filed this month tied the group to a Russian cybersecurity company called Yutek-NN.
