Paddling Into the Wild: Why Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary Belongs on Every Anchorage Itinerary

There is a moment, about halfway along the 1,500-foot boardwalk at Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary, when the city of Anchorage disappears entirely. The Chugach Mountains rise behind you in a wall of blue-gray granite, the mudflats of Turnagain Arm shimmer to the west, and somewhere in the cattails a Trumpeter Swan is announcing itself with a brass-section confidence that stops you cold. That moment is exactly why I keep coming back to this place, and exactly why you need to put it on your list before you do almost anything else in Anchorage.

Potter Marsh sits at the southern end of Anchorage, tucked just off the Seward Highway at roughly mile marker 117, less than fifteen minutes from downtown. The marsh is actually a constructed wetland — a happy accident of railroad building in the early twentieth century, when a berm was built along the coast and freshwater pooled behind it into a productive, thriving ecosystem. Today it is part of the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge and draws birders, photographers, families, and casual walkers from spring all the way through the first hard frosts of autumn.

The elevated wooden boardwalk is the centerpiece of the experience, and it earns every plank. Wide enough for strollers and wheelchairs, the walkway puts you directly over the water so you feel genuinely immersed rather than peering in from a distance. In May and June, the marsh erupts with nesting activity. Arctic Terns dive-bomb intruders with a ferocity that is both alarming and deeply entertaining. Canada Geese parade their goslings through the shallows. Sockeye salmon push upstream in late summer, visible from the boardwalk railings as flashes of red just below the surface, which in turn draws bald eagles in numbers that feel almost theatrical.

You do not need binoculars to enjoy Potter Marsh, though a pair will absolutely reward you. The viewing platforms spaced along the boardwalk are ideal for lingering, and there are interpretive signs that give you just enough context without turning the whole thing into a lecture. Bring a light jacket regardless of the forecast — the breeze off Turnagain Arm has opinions — and wear layers if you are visiting in shoulder seasons.

Parking is free, the trail itself costs nothing, and dogs on leashes are welcome. It is one of those rare places that delivers genuine wilderness atmosphere without requiring a permit, a guide, or a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Early morning visits in summer are especially rewarding; the light on the water is extraordinary and the crowds are thin.

Potter Marsh is not a consolation prize for days when bigger adventures fall through. It is a destination in its own right — one that reminds you, quietly and insistently, that Anchorage is a city built right at the edge of something enormous and alive.
