The Man Who Made North Park’s Best Banh Mi

Around 10:30 on a Tuesday morning, Lan Nguyen is already elbow-deep in work. The front of her small shop on University Avenue isn’t open yet, but the smell coming through the propped door — pickled daikon, warm baguette, pork fat hitting a hot pan — does enough advertising on its own. By 11, there will be a line. There is always a line.

Bánh Mì Mỹ Lan has been operating in North Park long enough that people who moved to the neighborhood after it opened assume it’s always been there, the way you assume a mature tree was always that tall. It wasn’t always there. Lan opened it herself, with money saved over years of catering and restaurant work, and she runs it with her son Minh, who handles the register, the social media she doesn’t care about, and the job of convincing his mother to occasionally take a Sunday off. She does not take Sundays off.

The menu is short on purpose. You can get a classic bánh mì — Vietnamese deli meats, house-made pâté, pickled carrots and daikon, jalapeño, cilantro, mayo on a French roll baked fresh every morning by a bakery two neighborhoods over. You can get a lemongrass chicken version. There’s a tofu option that actually tastes like it belongs there, which is rarer than it should be. Lan will tell you, without being asked, that the bread is the thing most places get wrong. She is correct.

Sandwiches run $7 to $10 depending on protein, which in this city feels almost confrontational in its reasonableness. There are also Vietnamese iced coffees made with Trung Nguyên grounds and sweetened condensed milk, and a rotating cup of soup — usually bún bò Huế or a light chicken broth — that shows up on a small chalkboard by the door when it’s available. It’s not always available. That’s part of the charm, or at least that’s how regulars have learned to describe the mild chaos of not knowing what’s coming.

The room fits maybe eight people comfortably, twelve if everyone is on good behavior. There are no large tables. The walls have a few framed photos — Lan as a younger woman, what looks like a street market, nothing labeled — and a small shelf with a Buddhist altar in the corner that most first-timers don’t notice. It is a functional space for a functional restaurant, which is to say it was designed by someone who cared more about the food than the Instagram moment.

Minh will sometimes talk your ear off if you let him, mostly about the neighborhood, occasionally about his own opinions on bánh mì that differ from his mother’s. Lan, overhearing this, will say something in Vietnamese. He will nod and return to the register.

North Park has accumulated a lot of restaurant ambition over the past decade — elaborate cocktails, tasting menus, brunch concepts that require a paragraph to explain. Bánh Mì Mỹ Lan is none of that. It is a woman who learned to make very good food and decided that was enough of a plan. So far, she appears to be right.

Cash is preferred. Parking on University is its usual miserable self. Go before 1 p.m. or expect to wait.
