Upper Township Approves Beach Tag Fees for Strathmere Shoreline

The Upper Township Committee in New Jersey has taken a decisive step to preserve and maintain the beloved Strathmere shoreline by approving a beach‑tag ordinance. Beginning next summer, visitors will be required to purchase a tag to access the beach, a move the committee says will help fund essential upkeep and safety services.

Fee structure and exemptions

Under the new ordinance, a daily beach tag will cost $10, while a weekly tag will be priced at $20. Seasonal passes will be available for $45, with a discounted rate of $30 for those purchased before President’s Day. The policy includes clear exemptions: residents under the age of 16, active military personnel, and veterans will be allowed beach access without a tag.

Why the change matters to the community

Strathmere has long been one of the few New Jersey beach communities offering free public access. Committee members explained that the modest fees are intended to cover rising costs for lifeguard staffing, beach cleaning, and infrastructure repairs, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for families and visitors alike. By generating a reliable revenue stream, the township aims to protect the natural beauty of the shoreline while avoiding the need for higher taxes.

Local response

Residents expressed a mix of support and concern at the public hearing. Many parents welcomed the idea of a well‑maintained beach, noting that the exemption for children under 16 protects family outings. Veterans’ groups praised the decision, highlighting the continued gratitude for those who have served. Some community members voiced worries about the added cost, but the committee emphasized that the fees are modest compared with similar beach‑tag programs in neighboring towns.

Implementation timeline

The ordinance will take effect at the start of the 2027 beach season. The township plans to install signage at all entry points and will provide information on how to purchase tags online or at local vendors. Officials also indicated that they will monitor the program’s impact and consider adjustments if necessary.

Looking ahead

Upper Township’s decision reflects a broader trend among coastal municipalities seeking sustainable funding for beach maintenance. By balancing fiscal responsibility with community access, the township hopes to set a responsible example for other New Jersey shore towns.
