The Nebraska Board of Regents unanimously voted to eliminate nine low-enrollment academic programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, including a BA and BS in Ethnic Studies and a BS in Insect Science.
Program Cuts and Budget Increase
The decision to cut programs came before a discussion of the 2026-27 budget. Regents cited low enrollment, accreditation concerns, and faculty retirements as reasons for the cuts. Other programs cut include UNMC’s post baccalaureate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and UNO’s master’s in industrial and organizational psychology.
Students expressed frustration over higher housing costs and new fees. A fourth-year medical student at UNMC, Alexander Belaschenko, said the current financial model is not sustainable. The regents approved a request for a 4.25% increase each year for the school’s next two-year budget cycle.
