A Kenai High School senior, Luci Micciche, has designed warning signs to be installed along the Turnagain Arm to warn visitors of the dangers of mudflats. The signs are part of a broader public service campaign to save lives and keep people out of dangerous situations on the mudflats.

Mudflat Dangers

The mudflats in the Turnagain Arm area are notoriously dangerous due to highly saturated glacial silt that acts as interlocking quicksand. People can get trapped on the mudflats, and if emergency personnel are unable to reach them in time, they can sink into the mud and either drown or perish from hypothermia in the quickly rising Cook Inlet tide.

Luci was motivated by the stories of people who have perished on the mudflats and took action to prevent future tragedies. She designed unique warning signs to be placed at various access points of the mudflats, which will be installed in partnership with the Alaska Railroad Corporation.

Luci plans to continue working with other organizations to ensure that there are adequate warning signs along the coast where people are most likely to enter the mudflats. She also plans to work with local hotels to get this critical warning information to visitors.
