University of Saint Francis launches tuition‑free program for qualifying Fort Wayne students

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis announced a new initiative that could eliminate tuition costs for qualifying lower‑income students beginning in the fall 2027 semester. Dubbed the Saint Francis Promise, the program will cover the full tuition and mandatory fees for eligible incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Program details and eligibility

According to university officials, eligibility will be based on a combination of family income, household size and other circumstances rather than a single income cutoff. While the university estimates that many families earning less than $70,000 annually could qualify, the final determination will come after each applicant completes the FAFSA.

The Promise will waive up to $38,680 of the typical $50,970 tuition bill. It does not include room and board, program‑specific fees, textbooks or other miscellaneous costs, but it removes the largest financial barrier for students seeking a degree.

University leadership’s vision

University President Sister Maria Gemma‑Salyer explained that the program reflects the institution’s mission rooted in the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration: “We really see a need in our local community for students who truly can’t afford college.” She added that the university has carefully evaluated its finances and determined it can once again close the financial gap for those who qualify.

Communications Director Reggie Hayes noted that historically about 200 students enroll each fall who meet the financial‑need criteria. He expects the Saint Francis Promise to serve a similar number of families once fully implemented.

Student impact

Nevaeh Niendorf, a sophomore from a low‑income household, described the challenges of juggling scholarships, loans and part‑time work to stay in school. “This program could make a major difference for students like me,” she said, emphasizing the relief it would bring to families struggling to afford higher education.

Broader community significance

The initiative arrives as Indiana faces ongoing discussions about college affordability and state‑level tuition assistance. By offering a tuition‑free pathway, the University of Saint Francis adds a faith‑based, locally focused solution that aligns with the community’s values of family support and personal liberty.

Local families, high school counselors and faith‑based organizations are encouraged to spread the word and help prospective students navigate the FAFSA process. The university plans to hold informational sessions in the coming months to ensure eligible students are aware of the opportunity.

Next steps

Prospective applicants should begin preparing their FAFSA filings now, as the university will use those results to determine eligibility. Additional details about the program, including application timelines and required documentation, will be posted on the university’s website later this summer.

The Saint Francis Promise underscores the university’s commitment to making higher education accessible while preserving its Catholic heritage of compassion and service.
