Lincoln residents have a chance to support a worthy cause and showcase school pride on November 13. The Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) and the University of Nebraska are partnering for a blood drive at the Tom Osborne Legacy Complex from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Why the drive matters
The event is part of the Big Ten Conference and Abbott’s third annual We Give Blood competition, which lets donors attribute their donation to any Big Ten school. The competition runs through December 4, giving donors nationwide the opportunity to boost their chosen school’s total.
Nebraska entered the 2026 contest after narrowly missing the top spot in 2025, falling short of Wisconsin by just 925 donations. The Huskers reclaimed the championship in 2024, and university officials are eager to bring the title back this year.
How to participate
Anyone eligible to donate blood can make an appointment online through the NCBB website. Walk‑ins are also welcome, though scheduling ahead helps ensure a smooth experience. Donors will be asked to select “University of Nebraska” as the school they wish to support when they check in.
In addition to the life‑saving impact of each pint, participants will be entered into a raffle for local prizes, and the university will recognize top donors on campus and across its social channels.
Community impact
Blood drives like this one reinforce the strong tradition of service that defines Nebraska’s families and faith communities. By contributing to the competition, donors not only help patients in need but also demonstrate the collective spirit that makes the Huskers a point of pride for the state.
The NCBB emphasizes that the blood collected will be distributed to hospitals and clinics throughout Nebraska, addressing ongoing shortages and ensuring that patients receive timely care.
Looking ahead
The competition concludes on December 4, after which the Big Ten will announce the winning school. Organizers hope the Lincoln drive will inspire additional events across the conference, fostering a culture of generosity that benefits both the local community and the broader region.
