Saturday Morning at Seven Stars Bakery on Broadway

My neighbor once told me she sets her alarm for Seven Stars. Not to get there early exactly, but because the smell of it in the morning — when she’s still half-asleep and the windows are cracked — is enough to make her want to get out of bed. I thought that was a little dramatic until I actually lived nearby. Now I get it.

Seven Stars Bakery has three locations in Providence, but the one on Broadway, in the West Side neighborhood, is the one I keep coming back to. It opened in 2001, started by Lynn Williams and her husband, and what they built has stayed genuinely local in a city that sometimes outsources its good things to Boston. The Broadway spot is bright and wide-windowed, with long communal tables and the particular low-grade noise of a room full of people having actual conversations rather than staring at laptops — although there are plenty of laptops too, to be fair.

Go on a Saturday morning if you can swing it. The line at the counter moves fast enough that it doesn’t feel punishing, but slow enough that you have time to actually look at what’s in the cases. The morning buns are what I always end up with — laminated dough rolled in cinnamon sugar, the outside slightly crisp, the inside layered and soft. They’re not fancy. They’re just exactly right. The croissants are serious: properly flaky, buttery without being greasy, the kind you’d drive a little farther for. If you’re the type to eat a savory breakfast, the ham and cheese croissant is worth the extra two dollars.

Coffee comes from local roasters and it’s good, but honestly the food is why you’re here. The granola, sold in bags by the counter, is the thing half the regulars grab on their way out. It’s become one of those Providence staples people bring when they visit friends who’ve moved away.

On a wet Tuesday in November, the place feels almost therapeutic. The windows fog a little. People fold their coats over the backs of chairs. There’s no soundtrack fighting for your attention — just the ambient clink and murmur of a neighborhood bakery doing what it’s supposed to do. I’ve had full conversations with strangers at the communal tables there, the kind that happen naturally when the room isn’t designed to keep you siloed.

Prices are reasonable for the quality: morning buns around $4, croissants $4–$5, a latte somewhere in the $5–$6 range. Nothing that makes you feel like you’re being taxed for the ambiance. They open at 7 a.m. on weekdays, 7:30 on weekends, and they close by mid-afternoon most days — it’s a morning-and-lunch operation, full stop.

The Broadway location has a small amount of street parking and is on the RIPTA 11 line if you’re coming from elsewhere on the West Side or from downtown. It’s not the kind of place that needs a special occasion. That’s probably what I’d want you to take away: the best use of Seven Stars is an ordinary Saturday, nothing on the calendar, coffee you didn’t have to compromise on, and something warm in front of you while the city wakes up.
