University of Idaho Secures $14.6 Million Federal Grant to Boost Child Care Services

The University of Idaho announced today that it has received a two‑year, $14.6 million contract from the federal Child Care Development Fund. The award will fund the IdahoSTARS project, a partnership between the university and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare aimed at strengthening the state’s child‑care system.

Building on Two Decades of Collaboration

“This award reflects more than two decades of partnership with Idaho’s child‑care community,” said Melissa Crist, director of early childhood programs at the University’s Idaho Center on Disabilities and Human Development. Crist added that the grant also recognizes the robust statewide infrastructure that IdahoSTARS has built, which families, providers, and state partners rely on daily.

What the Funding Will Support

The $14.6 million will finance core components of IdahoSTARS, including a comprehensive training system for child‑care workers and the maintenance of the statewide Quality Recognition and Improvement System. Those tools help child‑care centers meet high standards and give parents confidence that their children are in safe, nurturing environments.

In addition to workforce development, the grant will assist families in locating child‑care options that fit their schedules and budgets. By improving access to reliable care, the project supports working parents and contributes to the economic health of Idaho communities.

Administration Oversight

Idaho Health and Welfare will administer the contract, ensuring that federal funds are directed efficiently to the project’s objectives. The Child Care Development Fund, a federal program, provides the financial resources for this effort.

Local Impact

For Idaho families, the expanded training and quality‑recognition system mean more qualified caregivers and greater assurance that child‑care centers meet rigorous standards. Child‑care providers will benefit from professional development opportunities that enhance their skills and improve service quality.

University officials expect the partnership to continue strengthening Idaho’s child‑care landscape, helping the state attract and retain families who need dependable, high‑quality care for their children.
