Arizona State University and Syracuse University are taking advantage of the growing influencer economy by offering degrees in content creation. ASU recently announced a bachelor’s degree in content creation, while Syracuse University is launching an interdisciplinary minor in the field.
Preparing Students for the Creator Economy
The programs aim to prepare students for careers in content creation, digital entrepreneurship, and the broader ecosystem supporting creators and online businesses. ASU’s program includes courses such as ‘How to Become an Influencer’ and a capstone at the school’s Los Angeles Content Creation Studio.
According to Ryan Schram, the executive director of Syracuse’s Center for the Creator Economy, the school’s content creation minor is a gateway into jobs that didn’t exist a decade ago. ‘A lot of the students that we have talked to, their number one desire for a career path is something in the creator economy, but not all of them want to be behind the mic,’ he said.
The influencer market is becoming increasingly competitive, with brands becoming more selective about who they work with. Experts advise aspiring content creators to find a niche and consider picking up a second major in a field like literature or theology.
The Future of the Creator Economy
The creator economy is expected to be worth nearly $500 billion by 2027, according to Goldman Sachs. As the industry continues to grow, universities are adapting to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this field.
